Who We Are & What We're About

Remember the quiet kids from high school?

The ones who sat patiently in the back, took notes in absolute silence, and perpetually flew under the radar with brilliant subtlety?

At Bortel & Co., we were never those kids.

We were the extroverts, the desk-drummers, the ones humming a little too loudly in the halls. We were the ones frantically drawing energy from the people around us because we would have fallen asleep otherwise. Sometimes, we still did. Parent/teacher conferences were hard.

Eventually, we grew up and became adults who play real drums and talk to strangers on airplanes and still get the same visceral life-force from the folks around us that most aged redwoods get from a few centuries’ worth of direct sunlight. (To be fair, we sleep more than we used to.)

We know what you’re thinking:

What am I reading? I thought this was about real estate. I’m just trying to find an adorable Spanish colonial along the Mississippi. Fear not, dear reader. You’re in the right place.

The process of buying or selling a home almost always means you’re at a crossroads of sorts: Whether you’re trying to get out of your parents’ place, searching for the perfect spot to start a family, flipping a property as an investment, settling down in a low-maintenance condo after retirement, branching out on your own after a bad breakup… whenever you buy or sell, there’s something bubbling under the surface. And that’s what we’re in this for.

At Bortel & Co., “closing the deal” isn’t our raison d’être.

Nor are commissions or competition or selling the biggest houses. We’re here because there’s longevity in meeting new people and offering expertise during a time of transition; there’s a sense of humanity unearthed by this process that isn’t found in other places. We’re here to meet you where you are, understand your goals and help you distill them into actionable options, and offer advice from a place of empathy and friendship. We're here to handle the nitty-gritty and dig into all the fine print so you don't have to, and dare we say we'll all have some fun doing it.

If you’re interested in having Bortel & Co. represent you as you buy a new home or sell your existing one, we recommend you start by reading our bios and checking out real-world client feedback to see if we’re your kind of folks. We’ve also been known to frequent coffee shops across the Twin Cities, and you can write to jen.bortel[at]kw.com if you’d like to feel out the dynamic in person. After all, if we don’t sit down and chat with somebody in person soon, we’re liable to fall asleep in our offices.
